Hotel The Craftsmen
Amsterdam · The Netherlands
A canal house hotel in the centre of Amsterdam, where the building
and the concept are one and the same.
14 rooms · Canal house hotel · Amsterdam · Open year-round
The Craftsmen sits within a historic canal house in the centre of Amsterdam.
From the outside, it is one building among many, positioned within a continuous row along the canal. Inside, the original structure takes over.
Narrow staircases, exposed beams, sloped ceilings
and shifts in height make it clear this was never designed to be a hotel.
Movement through the building follows its existing form rather than a reworked layout.
Spaces feel shaped rather than arranged, with transitions that reflect
the structure of the house itself.
That tension remains central.
It is what makes it work.
The Hotel
Each room is built around a different craft, with materials, details and layout following that idea.
Wooden beams and structural elements remain visible throughout,
reinforcing the connection to the building. Some rooms open up slightly, others remain more compact, depending on their position within the house.
The variation is deliberate, but never excessive.
Each room follows its own direction, while remaining part of a consistent overall approach.
No two rooms follow the same logic.
The idea behind them does.
The Rooms
Breakfast is served within the hotel, simple and well considered.
There is no full restaurant. The surrounding neighbourhood, one of Amsterdam’s stronger areas for food and coffee, extends the experience beyond the building itself.
At street level, The Craftsmen Kitchen serves coffee, juices and a small selection of sandwiches. Used by both locals and guests, without becoming
a focal point.
Dining
There is no spa at The Craftsmen.
Some rooms include a freestanding bathtub, integrated into the space rather than set apart, continuing the approach seen throughout the hotel.
Wellness
Set along one of Amsterdam’s canals, within walking distance of the main streets, restaurants and galleries.
The immediate surroundings are calmer in scale, shaped by the water and the buildings alongside it.
The city remains close, but does not define the atmosphere directly.
Central, without announcing itself.
Location
A concept that runs through every room without becoming a theme
Spaces shaped entirely by the original structure
A scale that feels considered
Strong variation between rooms, yet consistent in approach
A canal location that remains relatively removed from busier streets
Some places are defined by uniformity,
This one is defined by variation.
Why we love it
